Creating & Grading TurnItIn Assignments

This video will walk you through setting up an assignment to use the TurnItIn plagiarism checker inside of your Canvas course.


How to Create Turnitin Assignments:

  1. From within your course, open the Assignments tab
  2. Click +Assignment at the top right
  3. Fill in the normal assignment settings.
  4. When you arrive at Submission Type, click External Tool 
  5. Click Find and locate Turnitin from the list of external tools.
  6. Click Save at the bottom. Don’t forget to publish as well!
  7. You will now see an empty Turnitin box where you will see student submissions.


How to access SpeedGrader:

  • From an assignment/quiz page, click SpeedGrader at the top of the right-hand sidebar.
  • Or, from a discussion board, click the Gear Icon and select SpeedGrader from the drop-down settings menu
  • Or, from the course home page, click any assignment that needs to be graded under the To Do column on the right-hand sidebar
  • Or, from the Gradebook, click the arrow next to the assignment name for a drop-down menu, and from here select SpeedGrader


Weighting & Dropping Grades

This video will walk you through creating assignment groups and assigning group weights to calculate in the grade book as well as how to drop grades inside an assignment group.


How to weight grades:

  1. Open your course and go to Assignments in the left-hand sidebar.
  2. At the top right of the screen, click +Group.
  3. Type the assignment group name and click Save.
  4. Repeat steps 2-3 for all assignment categories in your syllabus.
  5. Once all your groups are created, if you already have existing assignments in your course, drag the 8-dot icon next to the assignment name and drop it in the corresponding category.
  6. At the top right of the Assignments screen, click the three-dot icon and select Assignment Groups Weight.
  7. Check the box that says Weight final grade based on assignment groups and assign a percentage to each category.
  8. Click Save or Save & Publish.
  9. From your assignments page, you will see that each group indicates a percentage of the total grade.
  10. Within your Gradebook, at the far right you will see columns for each assignment group and each student’s percentage in that category. The final grade is calculated according to the weights you set up in steps 6-8.


How to drop grades:

  1. If you have not already set up assignment groups, do so first:
    1. Open your course and go to Assignments in the left-hand sidebar.
    2. At the top right of the screen, click +Group.
    3. Type the assignment group name and click Save.
    4. Repeat steps 2-3 for all assignment categories in your syllabus.
    5. Once all your groups are created, if you already have existing assignments in your course, drag the 8-dot icon next to the assignment name and drop it in the corresponding category.
  2. Open Assignments in the left-hand sidebar.
  3. To the right of each assignment group, click the gear icon and select Edit
  4. Under Number of scores to ignore for each student, indicate the number of scores you wish to drop (usually from the lowest scores).
  5. You can also elect to Never Drop a specific assignment.
  6. Click Save
  7. Now, to the right of each assignment group name, you will see the percentage of the total you assigned (if you weighted grades) and any rule(s) you applied to the group.
