One of the features available in the new Canvas Gradebook is the ability to excuse assignments for particular students. This is especially beneficial if who don't require students to make up assignments they missed due to school activities or illnesses. The standard practice has been to just not put in a grade for that student, which means the assignment won't count toward the final grade. Instead of leaving the assignment status as missing for a student, you can now change the status to "excused." This will remove the "missing" label from the student's gradebook, and it will also help professors more easily identify which assignments are truly missing and which assignments have been excused.

To change a status to excused, it just takes a few simple steps:

  1. In the gradebook, click on the particular assignment grade field as if you were entering a grade. Instead of typing in a grade, select the right facing arrow. This will open the grading tray to the right of the screen.
  2. Under Status, select Excused. You will notice that this puts an excused label in the grade field, which means that assignment is no longer required for the student.
  3. Repeat these steps for each excused assignment.
